Our promise

The value of craft sits in the maker's hand. But the distance between that hand and daily life keeps growing. KŌGEI exists to close three of those gaps, with film and software working as a single pair.

Three gaps between the maker and the home.

Founder’s message

Years of filmmaking around the world brought the outline of Japan into sharper focus. I came back sure of one thing: I love this country.

At twenty-one, I set off on a bicycle trip around Japan. The first craft region I stopped in was Hakata-ori. The president of the workshop made time for a nameless young man on a bicycle, sat down to talk, and walked me through the factory himself. That hospitality is still where my work begins.

Japanese craft holds a strength that has not yet reached the world. KŌGEI is the company that takes on both halves of that work — getting it there, and supporting it at home.

Portrait coming soon.

I have travelled through 14 countries. The world is full of landscapes beyond scale and views beyond imagination. And yet, the further I went on my own feet, the sharper Japan came into focus — not the world, but home. The infrastructure that just works, the quiet care of every handmade thing, and the warmth I was met with simply for being Japanese. I want to pass on, intact, the country those before us built. At the end of that thought, I found craft. At KŌGEI I weave the words and the relationships that sit between our regions and the world.
